Radio Talk Show Host Example Misunderstanding of Disabilities

There has been a lot of publicity about the radio talk show host Michael Savage who made some controversial remarks about autism.  Many felt his remarks were foolish, mean-spirited and hurtful. But the deeper problem is that even today, with all the information out there, far too many disabilities are still misunderstood. This incident shows that we have much work to do on behalf of children with disabilities, not only to help improve their lives, but also to make their conditions understood.  Parent support groups, the non-profit community and the internet have been great vehicles to disseminate this information.  But obviously more needs to be done. There was a great deal of solidarity as many disability communities rose up in protest over these remarks.   We all need to think of positive ways to dissolve the ignorance and misconceptions that still exist out there even in informational-rich times like these.
